Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl has expressed a newfound love
for the 1990s grunge band Alice in Chains, describing them as his favourite band now
during a recent conversation with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe.
The admission came during a discussion regarding the most influential vocalists of the grunge era. Grohl touched upon the legacies of his former Nirvana bandmate Kurt Cobain and the late Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell before shifting focus to Alice in Chains frontman Layne Staley.
“Oh my God, dude, here’s the best thing about driving around with [my daughters] Violet and Harper in a car: I have this newfound love of Alice in Chains. It’s back. They’re like my favourite band now. They should have been 35 years ago, but now I’m like, ‘Wait, where was I on that one?’” Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters frontman
Grohl elaborated on the visceral impact of music, suggesting that songs integrate themselves into a listener’s identity.
“Every song you hear becomes like a strand in your DNA, those lyrics and those songs become a part of you. There’s a huge connectivity in the energy of music just as there is in the connectivity in the energy of everything.” Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters frontman
‘Your Favorite Toy’ and Recent Promotions
The interview coincided with the release of the latest Foo Fighters album, Your Favorite Toy
, which arrived on April 24, 2026. The record includes the title track as well as the singles Caught In The Echo
, Asking For A Friend
, and Of All People
.
To support the launch, the band performed Caught in the Echo
and Child Actor
live for the first time during an appearance on Saturday Night Live UK on the weekend of April 25-26, 2026.
The band also released a music video for the track Spit Shine
, which features a zombie apocalypse theme and was written and directed by Grohl.
During a promotional visit to London, Grohl and guitarist Pat Smear surprised attendees at an album listening party. The pair entered the event while a fan was performing a karaoke version of the band’s 1997 song Monkey Wrench
.
Critical Reception and Personal Reflection
NME awarded the new album three-and-a-half stars, noting that while Grohl has rediscovered his roar
vocally, the lyricism is often throwaway
. The review suggested the album provides little insight into Grohl’s mindset following an infidelity scandal that occurred two years prior.
However, the publication highlighted the track Child Actor
as a significant exception. The review described the song as a moment where Grohl unflinchingly examines his need for validation
after spending 30 years as the band’s frontman.
NME concluded that the album represents a return to no-frills punk
that is played fast and loud
, comparing its vitality to the band’s 1997 release, The Colour and the Shape
.
Global Touring Schedule
Foo Fighters have announced an extensive series of stadium dates across three continents to support the new material:
- Europe: A stadium tour including two nights at Anfield Stadium in Liverpool at the end of June 2026.
- North America: A stadium tour scheduled for the summer of 2026.
- Australia and New Zealand: A stadium tour slated for late 2026 and early 2027.
In separate recent comments, Grohl discussed a past encounter where he accidentally insulted David Bowie and shared his personal method for maintaining his vocal cords. He also addressed the current state of the United States, describing the country as deeply divided
and stating, There needs to be change.
