David Jiříček Joins Minnesota Wild: Trade Details & Impact
The Minnesota Wild acquired prospect David Jiříček and a 2025 fifth-round pick from the Columbus Blue Jackets. In exchange, the Wild sent defenseman Daemon Hunt and several draft picks: a conditional 2025 first-round pick, Colorado’s 2026 third-round pick, Toronto’s 2026 fourth-round pick, and a 2027 second-round pick.
David Jiříček was the sixth overall pick in the 2022 NHL Draft. He faced challenges during his time with the Blue Jackets. Last season, he played 43 games for Columbus, scoring one goal and 10 points. He averaged just 14:36 of ice time per game. Despite limited opportunities, he showed potential as a two-way defenseman with a solid on-ice save percentage of 92.4%.
In the AHL, Jiříček achieved success with the Cleveland Monsters, finishing with six goals and 38 points in his rookie season. He also performed well at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship, where he helped Czechia win silver and was recognized as the tournament’s best defenseman.
The Wild’s defense looks promising with Jiříček joining players like Brock Faber and Jared Spurgeon. The team has a strong 15-4-4 record at the start of the 2024-25 season. The first-round pick included in the trade is top-five protected, allowing Minnesota to manage their draft strategy effectively.
Daemon Hunt, who also moved to Columbus, faced similar challenges breaking into the NHL. He played nine games for the AHL’s Iowa Wild this season.
The trade signals Minnesota’s commitment to building a solid defensive lineup while providing Columbus with multiple draft picks to enhance their roster for the future.
