Adam Wilkie, a 33-year-old marketing manager, has launched a mission to match the 200m breaststroke world record time set by his father, David Wilkie, at the 1976 Montreal Olympics.

The target time is two minutes 15.11 seconds. Adam has committed to a year of full-time training under a professional coach and has left his job to pursue the goal for charity and in memory of his father, who died of cancer in 2024 at the age of 70.

The Legacy of David Wilkie

David Wilkie was one of the most prominent British Olympians of his era. At the 1976 Montreal Games, he won the gold medal in the 200m breaststroke, becoming the first British man to win an Olympic gold medal in the pool in 68 years, since Henry Taylor.

The Legacy of David Wilkie

In that event, Wilkie beat the existing world record by three seconds. He also secured a silver medal in the 100m breaststroke during the same Olympics, finishing behind American swimmer John Hencken.

Wilkie’s career included several other major achievements prior to his retirement at age 22:

  • An Olympic silver medal in the 200m breaststroke at the 1972 Munich Games as a teenager.
  • Becoming a world champion in 1973.
  • Winning two world championship gold medals in 1975.
  • Achieving a world No 1 ranking in both the 200m breaststroke and 200m individual medley.
  • Attaining a world No 2 status in the 100m breaststroke.

By the time he retired, David Wilkie held five world records, 30 British records, 16 European records, and 23 Commonwealth records. He was appointed an MBE in 1977 and was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 1982.

The Challenge for Adam Wilkie

Adam Wilkie is attempting to recreate this historic mark 50 years after the original feat. While the world record for the 200m breaststroke has decreased by approximately 10 seconds since 1976, the time of 2:15.11 remains highly competitive. According to reporting by the BBC, such a time would have placed a swimmer in the top five at the British Championships held in 2025.

The transition from a corporate environment to professional training is significant. Adam noted that the closest he previously came to sport at work was using a standing desk.

He would think I am mad because he knows how hard it was, He knows how hard swimming is and how much work he put in to get to that time.

Despite the difficulty of the task, Adam believes his father would be proud of the effort to remember him through this athletic pursuit.

Innovation and Retirement

Beyond his competitive success, David Wilkie is credited with introducing the use of goggles and a swimming cap in the pool. Following his retirement from competitive swimming at 22, he transitioned into the business sector, exploring the commercial potential of swimming aids.
