updated June 7,2025
British comedian Dawn French has issued an apology after posting a video online addressing the Israel-Hamas conflict. The actress, known for her role in The vicar Of Dibley, acknowledged that she ”clumsily used a mocking tone” in the video, which led to it “appeared one-sided.” The video has as been removed.
In the now-deleted social media post, French alternated between her normal speaking voice and a higher-pitched tone while discussing the complexities of the conflict. She stated, “Complex, no, but nuanced,” and added, “Bottom line is, no.” At one point, using the higher-pitched voice, she said: “Yeah, but you know they did a bad thing to us.” The video sparked criticism, prompting French to address the situation.
French took to X to issue a statement, expressing her regret. She emphasized that her intention was never “to mock, or dismiss, or diminish the horror of what happened” on Oct. 7,2023. She added that her aim was to criticize the leaders on all sides of the conflict, but admitted she failed to convey that effectively.
“My intention was NEVER to mock, or dismiss, or diminish the horror of what happened on 7 October 2023 and what continues to unfold from that brutal unthinkable, unforgivable, savage attack,” French said.
The comedian further explained that she felt increasingly helpless watching the ongoing violence and destruction, notably the images of starving and wounded children. She hoped to voice her desire for an end to violence from all parties involved in the Israel-hamas conflict.
French concluded her statement by apologizing for any offence caused and reiterating that it was not her intention to offend. She confirmed that she had removed the video.
