DAZN, the British sports streaming platform, is reportedly ending it’s broadcast of France’s Ligue 1 football championship at the close of the current season, according to reports. However, a potential collaboration with the Professional Football League (LFP) on a new league-owned channel remains a possibility.
L’Équipe first reported DAZN’s anticipated exit from its Ligue 1 broadcasting agreement, citing sources within the platform. DAZN initially signed a contract with the LFP in July 2024, securing rights to broadcast eight of nine matches per day through June 2029.
The decision to terminate the contract stems from DAZN’s disappointment with subscriber numbers, perceived insufficient efforts by the LFP to combat piracy, and a lack of promotion from clubs to enhance the league’s appeal. DAZN had previously sought €573 million in damages from the LFP, alleging “deception on goods” and “observed inconvenience,” according to reports.
DAZN and beIN SPORTS Consider Partnering with LFP for Dedicated Ligue 1 Channel
Despite ending its broadcast agreement, DAZN may still partner with the LFP if the league launches its own channel next season, L’Équipe reports. This possibility has been under discussion for some time. DAZN stated, “We are convinced that we can bring to the League, as part of this chain project, a big added value.”
The agreement to terminate the existing contract includes a reported compensation payment of €100 million from DAZN to the LFP. The LFP had been receiving nearly €400 million annually under the contract, which also involved beIN SPORTS. The Franco-Qatari channel currently broadcasts one Ligue 1 match per day and must approve the contract termination. beIN SPORTS is reportedly more open to the termination if the LFP proceeds with launching a 100% Ligue 1 channel. beIN SPORTS already broadcasts all of Ligue 2.
DAZN will reportedly forgo the compensation payment if it joins the League in the new channel venture. DAZN told L’Équipe, “We are ready to invest a hundred million euros for this channel.” The platform is expected to fulfill its broadcasting commitments through the end of the current season.
