Updated July 3, 2025
Washington, D.C., is preparing for the annual Independence Day celebration on the National Mall. As of Wednesday evening, crews began implementing street closures around the area in anticipation of the massive crowds. The Fourth of July fireworks display is a major draw.
pennsylvania Avenue, from 12th to 14th streets, and 13th Street, from E Street to Pennsylvania Avenue, are among the affected areas. These closures will remain largely in effect throughout Friday.
Mike Litterst, with the National Park Service, said final preparations are underway. “We are just about ready,” Litterst said. He noted that crews are completing fence lines and positioning over 600 portable toilets. The fireworks are packed, loaded, and ready for the show.
Litterst advised those planning to attend the Fourth of July celebration to use public transportation. He emphasized that parking near the National Mall is extremely limited.
“Parking is not existent, you know, in and around the Mall, so Metro, far and away is going to be yoru best bet,” Litterst said. He also noted that Metrorail and Metrobus rides will be free after 5 p.m. on Friday.
Fencing is in place around the National Mall for security screenings. The National Park Service reminds visitors that glass bottles and personal fireworks are prohibited. Attendees should wear light clothing, stay hydrated, and expect to see a notable law enforcement presence. About 140 National Guard members will assist D.C. police with traffic and crowd control.
Brig. Gen. Leland D.Blanchard, with the D.C. National Guard, said the guard’s role is to help visitors navigate the area, especially those from out of town.”Just making sure people are able to find their way from point a to point b,especially all of those visitors that are coming in from outside the city,” Blanchard said.
Streets are scheduled to reopen Saturday afternoon. Though, officials cautioned that unexpected conditions could lead to changes in the reopening schedule.
What’s next
