The young victim was on his way to school with his father, Davion Rawlings, when the incident occurred in a shopping center parking lot on Minnesota Avenue. Rawlings and his son, Zion, had stopped briefly at a convenience store when the boy was struck.
Zion suffered a broken pelvis, bruised lungs, a broken ankle, and othre injuries, requiring hospitalization.
“Just kept going, like we was invisible,” Rawlings said, recounting the traumatic event. “I kind of heard to get out of the car’s way, but I look back and my son was on the ground.”
Rawlings recalled the frantic moments after the collision, expressing gratitude to a woman who called 911 while others watched. Security footage captured Rawlings’ desperate cries for help as he chased after the SUV.
