Atoya Smith, 34, of Hyattsville, Maryland, ⁢faces charges⁢ in connection with a ⁤hit-and-run that severely injured​ a 9-year-old boy ‌in Northeast D.C. on may 12. the Metropolitan Police Department arrested‌ Smith‌ and charged her ⁣with leaving⁤ the scene⁤ of a collision.

The young victim was on his way to school with his father, Davion Rawlings, when⁢ the incident occurred in a shopping center parking lot on Minnesota Avenue. Rawlings and his son, Zion, had stopped briefly at a convenience⁣ store when the boy was struck.

Zion suffered a broken pelvis, bruised lungs, a‌ broken ankle, and othre injuries, requiring hospitalization.

“Just kept going, like we was invisible,” Rawlings ⁤said, recounting the traumatic‍ event. “I kind of heard⁣ to get out of the car’s way, but I look back and my son was on the ground.”

Rawlings recalled ⁤the frantic moments after the collision, expressing gratitude ‍to ⁣a woman who called 911 while others watched. Security footage captured Rawlings’ desperate cries for help as he⁢ chased after the SUV.
