D.C. Police Investigate Officer-Involved Shooting Near Petworth Metro

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place early Saturday in Northwest D.C., close to the Georgia Ave-Petworth Metro station. According to police, no one was injured during the incident.
The officer involved has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard MPD policy following such events. Nashell Sowells, 43, of Northwest D.C., is now facing charges that include possession of an unregistered firearm and ammunition, simple assault, possession of a controlled substance, and destruction of property.
Officers were initially called to the 600 block of newton Place around 2:20 a.m. for a reported domestic disturbance.Upon arrival, officers attempted to de-escalate the situation. Police said Sowells then “produced a firearm.”
Authorities stated that officers gave repeated verbal commands for Sowells to drop the weapon. when she allegedly did not comply, an officer discharged their service weapon. Sowells was not struck by the gunfire.
According to the police, Sowells then allegedly began making threats to harm herself and moved toward the officers while still armed.An officer then deployed an electric control device, but police said it “did not take effect.” Officers were later able to take sowells into custody.
