De La Soul Slams ‘High And Rising’ as Unauthorized Book, Explores Legal Options
On November 19, author Marcus J. Moore released his book, High And Rising: A Book About De La Soul, published by Dey Street Books. The hip-hop group De La Soul responded via social media, labeling the book as “unauthorized” and stated they are considering legal action.
In their statement, De La Soul expressed gratitude for fan support but clarified that they do not endorse Moore’s book. They emphasized their commitment to controlling their narrative and sharing their story in their own words. The group highlighted the importance of their brand, noting that the title of Moore’s book is missing the “3”, a significant reference for them.
De La Soul announced they are working on their own project set for Spring 2025, promising an authentic representation of their journey.
Fans have shown support for Marcus J. Moore, defending his right to celebrate the group’s impact. Moore previously published The Butterfly Effect: How Kendrick Lamar Ignited The Soul Of Black America. He described High And Rising as a cultural biography that reflects his experience and honors De La Soul’s influence on him.
The book is currently available for preorder.
