Russian officials reported that Ukraine launched a massive drone attack overnight, resulting in the death of a woman near Moscow. This marks the first time a civilian has been killed near the capital since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
The Russian Defense Ministry stated that a total of 144 Ukrainian drones were shot down, with 72 intercepted over the Bryansk region, 20 over the Moscow region, 14 over the Kursk region, and 13 over the Tula region. An additional 25 drones were shot down in five other regions.
According to Russian state-run media, the Ukrainian attack caused flight cancellations or delays at four airports in Moscow, including major airports such as Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo.
Moscow Governor Andrey Vorobyov confirmed that the attack killed a 46-year-old woman and injured three others in the Ramenskoye district near the capital.
Aleksandr Bogomaz, the governor of the Bryansk region near Ukraine, stated on Telegram that “the enemy carried out large-scale terrorist attacks… There were no casualties, no damage, and all the attacks were repelled.”
Ukraine and Russia frequently use nighttime drone attacks against each other.
As Ukraine launched its latest wave of drone attacks, the Russian army continued to make gains in eastern Ukraine in its ongoing war of aggression. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian army advanced in the Kusk region of southwest Russia.
Russia announced the capture of another village, Memryk, which is believed to be a strategic location for the Russian army’s next move. The village is approximately 20 kilometers from Pokrovsk, a logistics hub currently controlled by Kiev.
Pokrovsk is a key location due to its proximity to a major road supplying the Ukrainian army and towns on the eastern front. The Russian army has long considered Pokrovsk a target.
Kiev authorities launched a counterattack in Russia’s Kusk region on August 6, aiming to force the Russian army to mobilize troops for reinforcements.
Russia has continued its airstrikes in Ukraine in recent weeks, targeting critical energy infrastructure ahead of winter.
