Catastrophic flash flooding along the China-Nepal border on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, has killed at least 160 people and left 900 missing, including dozens of foreign nationals, according to official reports. The disaster, centered on Nepal’s Rasuwa District and China’s Gyirong County, was triggered by a massive wall of mud and rock that collapsed into a Himalayan border river.

Border Casualties and Missing Foreign Nationals

At least 157 people were killed on the Nepali side of the border, according to local officials. Nepali police spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle stated that at least 62 Nepali citizens were unaccounted for, with at least 28 police officials among the missing.

Nepal’s tourism board reported that at least 341 foreign nationals were missing from the region. The missing foreign visitors include 47 Americans—with three listed as traveling with the Nepali Fishtail Tours and Travel Tourism Agency—alongside 133 Indian citizens on a Hindu pilgrimage to Mount Kailash in Tibet. Consular reports also account for 34 Australians, 33 Britons, 24 Canadians, 53 Ukrainians, 17 Malaysians, and 8 South Korean hydro-plant engineers.

As reported by CNBC, a large portion of the missing residents were either hiking close to the Gosaikunda Lake area or commuting through Rasuwagadhi, a border town, at the exact time the Janai Purnima Nepali festival was taking place.

Impact on Infrastructure and Rescue Operations

The powerful torrent of water and debris swept away homes, roads, and businesses. Local officials reported that at least 19 bridges and nearly 25 miles of road were destroyed, while several villages and hydropower projects were decimated. Fifteen hydro projects currently under development suffered damage according to Nepal’s Ministry of Energy, resulting in a loss of over 400 megawatts of electricity generation, while numerous imported electric cars and freight trucks were washed away. Chinese state broadcaster CGTN reported that China deployed over 570 emergency personnel and rescue equipment to Gyirong County to assist search efforts. Chinese leader Xi Jinping urged an all-out search effort, per state media. Shisir Khanal, the foreign minister of Nepal, informed the parliament of the nation that early findings indicated an earthquake-induced avalanche might have caused the floods. The United States Geological Survey initially recorded a 4.4-magnitude quake around the time security footage captured the border surge. However, the USGS later clarified that the trembling was not a tectonic earthquake, but rather registered as the equivalent of a 5.2-magnitude quake caused by the massive landslide itself.

Downstream Flood Warnings

Disaster agencies issued secondary flood warnings and flood alerts in populated areas downstream from the mountains, including the northern Indian states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, according to NDTV. Authorities cautioned that remaining river blockages upstream along the Trishuli River basin could trigger additional outburst floods.

Expressing profound sorrow over the fatality figures, the Embassy of the United States strongly advised American nationals residing within the impacted zones to steer clear of low-lying locations.
