Deadly Walkie-Talkie Explosions Rock Lebanon, Killing Nine and Injuring Over 300
Nine people lost their lives and more than 300 were injured in a series of explosions caused by walkie-talkies and other electronic devices used by members of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah. The blasts occurred in the southern region of the country and in the suburbs of the capital, Beirut.
According to reports, one of the explosions took place during the funeral of Mahdi Ammar, the son of Lebanese MP Ali Ammar, as stated by the Tehran Times.
Videos shared on social media platforms show the devastating impact of the explosions, which were caused by walkie-talkies inside vehicles.
Recent Similar Incidents
On Tuesday, pagers used by members of Hezbollah exploded in Lebanon, resulting in the loss of at least 12 lives and injuring 2,750 people.
Since the start of the Gaza war in October last year, Hezbollah has instructed its members to abandon mobile phones and rely on their own telecommunications system to prevent Israeli interception. Lebanon’s internal security forces reported that several wireless communication devices were detonated across the country, particularly in the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold.
The Hezbollah leadership has denied any involvement in the explosions, stating that they were contrary to their communication protocols.
It has been reported that the walkie-talkies were purchased by Hezbollah five months ago, at the same time as the pagers, according to Reuters.
Israel’s spy agency, the Mossad, is suspected of planting explosives in the devices imported by Hezbollah. A Taiwanese pager manufacturer has denied manufacturing the pager devices that exploded in a smart attack that raised the prospect of full-scale war between Iran-backed Hezbollah and Israel.
Gold Apollo stated that the equipment was manufactured under license by BAC, a company based in Budapest, the capital of Hungary.
Hezbollah’s Response
Hezbollah has fired rockets at Israeli artillery positions in retaliation for Tuesday’s caller blasts. The group usually announces such attacks soon after they are launched.
Meanwhile, the Minister of Defense of Israel, Yoav Galant, announced the beginning of a new phase of the war without mentioning the explosion of electronic devices in Lebanon.
Speaking to Israeli soldiers on Wednesday, Gallant praised the work of Israel’s military and security agencies.
