Deadly Delay: Abortion Ban Claims Life, Harris Points Finger at Trump’s Legacy

Deadly Delay: Abortion Ban Claims Life, Harris Points Finger at Trump’s Legacy

September 18, 2024 Catherine Williams - Chief Editor Health

2022 20s Female⁢ Death Accident Related to Abortion Ban in Georgia

Georgia’s official medical‍ malpractice commission has assessed the death of Amber Nicole Thurman in August 2022 as “preventable.” This is the first abortion-related death that the government ⁣has ⁢evaluated as preventable, according to ProPublica.

Thurman, 28, was six weeks pregnant with twins and ⁣took an abortion pill prescribed in‍ neighboring North Carolina in accordance with Georgia’s ⁢abortion ban. Afterwards, her condition rapidly worsened due to⁢ a rare complication of the abortion pill ‍and she was rushed to a Georgia hospital. However, the ‌hospital delayed ⁣the surgery for 17 hours due to concerns‍ about punishment under the ‌abortion ban. Thurman eventually died‍ during the belated surgery.

The conservative-led U.S. Supreme Court overturned the Roe v. ⁢Wade⁤ ruling, which guaranteed ‌federal abortion rights, in June 2022. Under its influence, Georgia enacted a law in ‍July of the same year banning abortions⁢ after six weeks of pregnancy, making it a felony punishable by up ‍to 10 years ⁢in prison. Just a month later, Thurman’s death occurred.

Vice President ‍Kamala Harris immediately responded to this report, criticizing, “This is exactly what ‍we feared when Roe v. Wade was struck down,” ⁤and “This is the result of⁤ Donald Trump’s actions.” Harris emphasized, “The government and Trump should⁤ not be able to dictate ‌what women do with their⁣ bodies and lives,” ⁤and “We must reinstate the protections of Roe v. Wade, and⁢ if the‌ bill passes Congress, I will proudly sign it into law.”

Former President Donald Trump claimed that⁤ the Supreme Court, which included conservative justices appointed by him, overturned the Roe v. Wade ruling, allowing‍ states to make decisions on ⁤abortion issues,⁢ and that this⁢ was “what everyone wanted.” As the deaths resulting from the overturning of the Roe v. Wade ruling have been revealed, the debate on abortion is bound ‍to heat up even more.

Meanwhile, Microsoft announced that propaganda organizations⁤ linked ‍to ⁢the Russian government are ‌stepping up⁢ attacks on the Harris camp ahead of the U.S. presidential election in November. These organizations distributed a fake video on social media showing that Vice President Harris caused a hit-and-run ‌accident in 2011,⁣ leaving a girl paralyzed. ‌The video quickly went viral, garnering 7 million‍ views on X (formerly ⁣Twitter) ⁣alone.

Another fabricated video showing two‍ black men attacking a white woman attending a rally supporting ‌former President Trump was also distributed, garnering millions of views. The U.S. government added two organizations, including the Russian state-run media outlet RT, and 10 individuals to its new sanctions list‌ on charges of attempting to influence the presidential election.
