(New York = Yonhap News) Correspondent Lee Ji-heon = Consul General Kim Eui-hwan of the United States in New York met with Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolic and City Councilman Paul Yoon regarding the death of Korean woman Lee (26) in a police shooting in Fort Lee, New Jersey in July, and conveyed the concerns of the Korean community.
According to the Consulate General in New York on the 13th (local time), Consul General Kim requested responsible action from the city authorities against the Port Lee police chief during the previous day’s meeting, and agreed that the Consulate General in New York would also participate in the process of establishing measures to prevent recurrence if necessary.
The consulate general reported that prior to meeting with the mayor of Port Lee, Consul General Kim met with Korean organizations and Asian community groups, including the New Jersey Korean Association and Asian Pacific Islander (AAPI) New Jersey, to gather opinions.
Mr. Lee, who lived in an apartment in Port Lee, New Jersey, was shot and killed by a local police officer who responded to his home on July 28, shocking the local Korean community.
The Lee family is demanding a thorough investigation into the incident, claiming that when they called 911 to request an ambulance to transport Lee, who suffered from bipolar disorder, to the hospital, the police who arrived first responded excessively, resulting in Lee’s death.
