Engineer’s Sudden Death After Drinking “Passion Fruit” Raises Concerns
A 25-year-old Zhuk engineer was found dead in a department store toilet after consuming a “passion fruit” drink with a 25% alcohol concentration and 700C. According to toxicologist Yan Zhonghai, this is equivalent to drinking 12 canned beers in 8 minutes, which can lead to sudden death.
The engineer had attended a competition in a bar before his death, where he drank a glass of “passion fruit” within 8 minutes. He then went to the toilet and passed out after about half an hour. It is understood that “passion fruit” is based on vodka, with the addition of passion fruit juice and an alcohol concentration of about 25%.
Yan Zhonghai, director of the Department of Clinical Toxicology at Lingkou Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, warned that drinking like this can be fatal. He explained that the alcohol concentration of commercially available beer is about 4% to 5%, but the “passion fruit” drink has a much higher concentration of 25%. If consumed in large quantities, it can lead to respiratory failure and death.
Yan Zhonghai also pointed out that the sweet and smooth taste of the “passion fruit” drink can make people lose their vigilance and drink too much alcohol. This can be particularly dangerous for people with cardiovascular disease and those at risk of liver cirrhosis.
In a similar incident in 2008, a female student at a private university in central China died suddenly after drinking two-thirds of a bottle of 58% alcoholic sorghum wine. These incidents highlight the dangers of excessive drinking and the importance of being aware of the risks.
Excessive drinking can have serious health consequences, including respiratory failure, liver damage, and even death. It is essential to drink responsibly and be aware of the risks associated with excessive drinking.
