West Nile Fever Outbreak in Germany: 6 Confirmed Cases in 2024
According to recent data from the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), a subordinate organization of the German Ministry of Health, at least six people in Germany have contracted West Nile fever after being bitten by infected mosquitoes since the beginning of 2024.
The affected regions include Saxony, with two reported cases, and one case each in Berlin, Brandenburg, Saxony-Anhalt, and Lower Saxony. Additionally, the RKI has identified five other cases of infection that may be linked to travel to other countries.
Historical data from the RKI shows that in 2023, seven cases of West Nile virus infection were registered, transmitted by domestic mosquitoes in Germany, and 17 cases were reported the previous year. However, experts warn that a significant number of cases may go unreported, as approximately 80% of those infected remain asymptomatic. This makes it particularly challenging for older individuals with pre-existing conditions to detect the disease.
Understanding West Nile Fever
West Nile fever is a viral disease primarily transmitted through the bite of an infected mosquito. While most people infected with the virus do not exhibit symptoms, severe cases can lead to serious health complications, especially among older adults and those with compromised immune systems.
