Shooting Incident Near Israeli Embassy in Jordan
AMMAN – A shooting incident occurred near the Israeli Embassy in Amman early Sunday, injuring three law enforcement officers. According to Jordan’s Petra News Agency, a gunman opened fire on police patrols and attempted to flee when police returned fire, resulting in the gunman’s death.
Gunfire was loud in the area, and emergency vehicles were visible at the scene in social media videos. The injured officers were taken to a hospital and are in stable condition.
Since October 2023, Amman has seen many pro-Palestinian protests linked to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza. A significant portion of Jordan’s population of 11.5 million is of Palestinian descent. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) reports that around 2.39 million registered Palestinian refugees live in Jordan.
Following the outbreak of the conflict, the Israeli ambassador to Amman left the country due to security concerns. Jordan recalled its ambassador in November to protest Israel’s military actions in Gaza.
Israel’s National Security Council has issued a high warning for travel to Jordan, citing terrorist threats. Their statement advises Israeli citizens to avoid traveling to Jordan and urges those currently there to leave promptly.
