The government statement said that after fans began throwing stones onto the field, panic ensued, leading to a crush of spectators. An investigation into the incident has been launched.
A video verified by Reuters showed dozens of people desperately trying to climb over high walls to escape the chaos. A Nzerekore city official,speaking on condition of anonymity,said many of the victims were children trapped in the surge after police deployed tear gas.
The official described scenes of “confusion and chaos,” with some parents recovering their children’s bodies before they were officially counted. Videos and images circulating online showed victims lying on the ground. One video appeared to show more than a dozen bodies, several of them children. Reuters was unable to immediately verify these images.
The opposition group, the National Alliance for Change and Democracy, blamed the authorities for organizing tournaments to bolster political support for Doumbouya, in violation of a transitional charter promising presidential elections. The military junta did not immediately respond to this accusation.
