A⁢ video verified by Reuters showed ⁢dozens of people desperately trying⁤ to climb over high walls to escape⁤ the chaos. ⁣A Nzerekore​ city⁣ official,speaking ‌on‍ condition ‌of ⁤anonymity,said many of⁢ the victims were children trapped in⁣ the surge after police deployed tear gas.

The official described scenes⁢ of “confusion and chaos,” with‌ some parents recovering ⁤their children’s bodies ​before they were officially ​counted. Videos and images⁤ circulating online showed victims lying ​on the ground. One video appeared to show more​ than a ‌dozen bodies, several of them children. Reuters ⁣was unable to immediately verify these images.

The opposition group, the National Alliance ⁢for Change and Democracy, blamed the authorities for organizing tournaments to bolster political support for‌ Doumbouya, in violation of⁢ a transitional charter‌ promising presidential elections. The military junta did not immediately ‍respond​ to this accusation.
