Deadly Thrill: The Shocking Rise of ‘Subway Surfing’ That’s Claiming Young Lives in the US
Deadly ‘Subway Surfing’ Trend Among American Teenagers Claims Six Lives This Year
A recent report by CNN has shed light on the alarming rise of ‘subway surfing’ among American teenagers, resulting in the deaths of six people this year alone. This trend, which involves riding on top of a moving subway, has been popular among teenagers for several years and has seen a resurgence in popularity through TikTok challenges on social networking services (SNS).
According to the New York Police Department, six people have died and 181 people have been arrested in subway surfing-related accidents from the beginning of this year to the 27th of last month. This is a significant increase from last year, when five people died and 118 people were arrested in similar accidents.
A recent incident in Queens, New York, highlights the dangers of this trend. On the 3rd, two teenage boys lost their balance and fell while surfing the subway on a moving train, killing one and seriously injuring the other. Another accident occurred on the 23rd of last month, resulting in the death of a 13-year-old boy who was ‘subway surfing’.
In response to the growing number of accidents, New York City authorities are taking measures to prevent teenagers from surfing the subway. The New York Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has partnered with social media platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, and Instagram to block or delete photos and videos related to subway surfing.
Furthermore, fourteen attorneys general across the United States have sued TikTok, holding the platform responsible for spreading the subway surfing challenge. The authorities are working to raise awareness about the dangers of this trend and to prevent further accidents.
As the number of subway surfing-related accidents continues to rise, it is essential for parents, educators, and authorities to work together to educate teenagers about the risks associated with this trend and to find ways to prevent it.
