Death Row Lawyer Claims US Uses Black Market Drugs in Executions

Clive Stafford Smith, a former lawyer for Death row inmates, alleges that U.S.prisons are resorting to black market drugs for carrying out executions. Smith also recounts witnessing the agonizing death of an innocent man in a gas chamber.
Smith, who represented numerous inmates on Death Row, saw two clients die by electrocution, two by lethal injection, and two in the gas chamber. Among them was Edward Earl Johnson, convicted in 1987 for the murder of a police officer and the sexual assault of a woman. Johnson, then 27, maintained his innocence.
According to Smith, a woman later claimed she was with johnson at the time of the crime, but police dismissed her statement. Although retired from Death Row cases,Smith remains an outspoken opponent of capital punishment.
Smith recalls Johnson’s final moments: “I walked into the gas chamber with Edward. He choked to death over quite a long time, about 15 minutes… He whispered in my ear,’Is there something you know I don’t know?’ He genuinely thought they still wouldn’t kill him.”
