Smith, who represented numerous inmates on‌ Death ⁢Row,⁣ saw two⁣ clients⁢ die by⁣ electrocution, two by⁤ lethal injection, and two in ​the‌ gas chamber. Among them was Edward Earl Johnson, convicted in 1987 for the murder of a‍ police officer and ⁢the sexual ⁣assault of a woman. Johnson, then⁣ 27, maintained‍ his innocence.
