Kojima Confirms ‘Death Stranding’ Anime Adaptation in Development

Hideo Kojima, the creator of death Stranding, has revealed that an anime adaptation of the game is in the works. This announcement comes alongside news of the upcoming live-action film adaptation.
kojima mentioned the anime while discussing the film with Vogue Japan. He noted the different approaches to adapting games into visual media, citing “The Last of Us” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” as examples. Kojima aims for the Death Stranding film to explore cinema’s expressive potential, with hopes of recognition at film festivals. The Death Stranding anime is being developed concurrently.

Kojima Productions partnered with A24 for the live-action Death stranding movie in December 2023.A24, known for producing films like “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and “hereditary,” seems a fitting collaborator for Kojima’s unique vision. Michael Sarnoski, director of “A Quiet Place: Day One,” is reportedly set to write and direct the film adaptation.
In addition to these adaptations, the sequel, Death Stranding 2, is scheduled for release on PS5 next month, June 25.
“I aim to create a Death Stranding that can only be realised through film, one that could win awards at festivals like the Cannes Film Festival or the Venice Film Festival. In fact, we are also currently working on an anime adaptation.”
