Actor Deborah Mailman is set to become the first Indigenous person inducted into the TV WEEK Logie Awards Hall of Fame, according to reporting by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation and The Australian Women’s Weekly.

According to coverage by ABC News, the induction ceremony takes place on August 16, 2026. Mailman will also become only the sixth woman to receive the honor in the 40-year history of the category, following recent inductees Rebecca Gibney in 2024 and Magda Szubanski in 2025. Ruth Cracknell was the first woman inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2001.

“This means everything,” Mailman told ABC Radio National’s Awaye!, as reported by ABC News and The Australian Women’s Weekly. “For me and for our mob, this isn’t just recognition for me. It’s recognition for everyone who’s gone before me, who changed things for someone like me to be doing the work that I’m doing.”

Mailman, who is of Bidjara and Māori descent, has built a career spanning more than three decades across theatre, television, and film. According to The Australian Women’s Weekly, she holds records in Logies history, winning Most Outstanding Actress four times alongside a Most Popular Actress win in 2019 and a Best Lead Actress in a Drama win in 2024 for her role as renegade politician Alex Irving in ABC TV’s Total Control.

Her breakthrough on screen came in the 1998 film Radiance directed by Rachel Perkins, where her role as Nona made her the first Aboriginal woman to win the AFI Award for Best Actress, now known as an AACTA Award, as noted by ABC News and The Australian Women’s Weekly. She followed that with her first major television role as Kelly Lewis in the drama series The Secret Life of Us, which earned her consecutive Logie Awards in 2002 and 2004.

Speaking to ABC News, Mailman reflected on how the Australian television industry has shifted over the past decade. “Where the most exciting storytelling is coming from is the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander sector,” she said. “It’s just getting stronger and stronger… look at the skill that’s there, that has been nurtured over a long time, to get to the point where we have so many of our mob doing incredible work.”

The 2026 Logies feature a strong showing of Indigenous representation, with nine First Nations actors nominated alongside five Indigenous-led or First Nations-focused projects, according to figures reported by The Australian Women’s Weekly. Mailman’s extensive television credits also include Redfern Now, Black Comedy, Bran Nue Dae, The Sapphires, Mystery Road, and Kangaroo.

Times are changing, thankfully, but it’s 2026. To be the first [Indigenous person] — it’s long overdue. Not just for me, but for anyone in this industry.
