Decatur Students Celebrate Graduation wiht New Caps and Gowns
Graduation season is a time of festivity, especially for students at Futures Unlimited and Milligan Academy in Decatur, Ill. This year, more than 55 students had the opportunity to participate in a traditional graduation ceremony, complete with caps and gowns, marking a significant milestone.
For the first time in recent years, these students experienced the joy of walking across the stage in full graduation attire. Kyla Poland, a school counselor, noted the importance of this experience, as many students had expressed a desire for a ceremony similar to those at their previous schools. The ”She Gave” grant made this possible, providing the necesary funding for the caps, gowns, and tassels.
The Heart of Illinois Community Foundation provided the funding, awarding nearly $4,000 last year and $4,500 this year. This financial support allowed the students to fully participate in the graduation experience, fostering a sense of pride and accomplishment. The graduation ceremony provided a traditional vibe that the students cherished.
Rickiya Neal, one of the graduates, expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to graduate early and share the moment with her loved ones. Her mother, Lawanda Neal, who has battled sickle cell since birth, shared her pride in her daughter’s achievement. Lawanda Neal credited prayer and her daughter’s resilience for overcoming challenges, including absences due to Lawanda’s health crises.
“It gives that traditional vibe, and many of our students have mentioned wishing for such an experience, similar to what their previous schools would have provided,” said counselor Kyla Poland. ”Offering them that experience here is truly special.”
Rickiya Neal plans to work at Bath & Body Works and pursue a career in cosmetology. Her mother looks forward to witnessing her daughter’s future success.
