Beloved Indonesian comedian Dede Sunandar recently opened up about his foray into politics, revealing the motivations behind his decision and the valuable lessons learned along the way.
Sunandar, known for his comedic timing and relatable characters, surprised many when he announced his candidacy. In a candid conversation, he shared that his entry into the political arena wasn’t a result of pressure but rather an invitation from fellow entertainer and political figure, Vicky Prasetyo.
“It wasn’t about being pushed into it,” Sunandar explained. “Vicky invited me to join the candidacy, saying, ‘Let’s change our fate, agree?’ I agreed with his proposition.”
Although Sunandar’s bid for public office ultimately fell short, he expressed immense gratitude for Prasetyo’s unwavering support throughout the campaign.
“Vicky has always been there for me,” Sunandar revealed. “Every Friday, he’d ask, ‘dede, how many people are at home? Here’s a little something for groceries, for food.’ He’d frequently enough send money too.”
Sunandar emphasized that he doesn’t view his political experience as a setback but rather a valuable learning chance.

Looking ahead, Sunandar expressed a preference for a behind-the-scenes role in politics, stating that he would be happy to serve as a campaign manager if given the opportunity.
“If I were to be involved in politics again, I’d prefer to be a campaign manager,” he concluded. “That’s where I see myself contributing.”
