Deftones’ Chino Moreno on “Koi No Yokan” as a “Reprise” of “Diamond eyes” adn “White Pony’s” Enduring Appeal
Deftones frontman Chino Moreno has opened up about the band’s creative process, drawing parallels between their albums and discussing the lasting impact of their seminal 2000 release, White Pony.Moreno views the band’s 2012 album, Koi No Yokan, as a intentional continuation of the sonic and emotional territory explored in its predecessor, Diamond Eyes.
“It was like, well, that worked,” Moreno explained regarding the approach to Koi No Yokan. “let’s try that again. To me,Koi no Yokan feels like a reprise of diamond Eyes.” This sentiment suggests a conscious effort to build upon the successful formula that resonated with fans and critics alike, capturing a specific moment in the band’s evolution.
The band’s enduring popularity is further cemented by classic albums like White Pony. Released in 2000, it features fan-favorite tracks such as “Change (In the House of Flies),” “Digital Bath,” and “Passenger.” When asked in 2020 about White Pony‘s continued resonance, moreno attributed its longevity to several key factors.
“I think it’s one of our best-produced records – it’s some of Terry’s finest work,” he stated, referring to producer Terry Date. “The drum sound is awesome. As we were kind of influenced by a lot of electronic, beat-driven music like DJ Shadow, we really wanted to make a drum-forward album. So, that record has a lot of head nod to it.”
Moreno also highlighted the album’s expansive nature. “There’s a lot of soundscape-y stuff, and there’s a heaviness – all those trigger points that Deftones are known for.” He recalled that upon its initial release, some listeners were taken aback, questioning the band’s direction. “I remember when we first put it out, some people didn’t get it right way, like, what is this? Where are the Deftones at?”
however, Moreno believes this initial ambiguity contributed to the album’s lasting appeal. “Obviously, there are parts that jump out at you, but overall I think it’s a headphone record – kind of a slow-burner. So, that’s given it life all these years.” This “slow-burner” quality, combined with its sonic depth and signature Deftones heaviness, has allowed White Pony to continually attract new fans while retaining its core audience.
Deftones are set to return to the road, with dates scheduled from August 22 in Vancouver through September 15 in Denver.
