Prague’s Dejvice Theatre will remain at the Galaxie cultural center for a bit longer than initially anticipated. While a return to its renovated home was projected for this fall, the acclaimed company will now continue performing in the former multiplex cinema until the end of the year, according to a statement made at a Prague 6 council meeting on Monday, .
The Dejvice Theatre first moved to the Galaxie space in September 2025 as a temporary solution while undergoing extensive renovations to its original building. The Galaxie complex, located in Prague 11, has since become a hub for multiple performing arts groups, including Divadlo Minor, the DanceConnected collective, and the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague’s (DAMU) studio.
The renovation project, costing 72.4 million Czech crowns, focuses on expanding the theatre’s capacity. An extension into the courtyard will increase seating from 150 to 200, addressing the consistently sold-out performances that have become a hallmark of the Dejvice Theatre. Improvements are also being made to backstage facilities, technological equipment, and the ventilation system.
While the construction is slated for completion this autumn, the theatre will ease back into its renovated space with a series of trial performances before fully resuming its schedule in the new year. The current agreement with Galaxie extends through the end of 2026, allowing for a smooth transition.
The Dejvice Theatre has established itself as one of the Czech Republic’s leading theatrical institutions. Founded in 1992 as part of the District Cultural House of Prague 6, it gained professional status in 1993 and has repeatedly been recognized as “Theatre of the Year.” Its productions and performers have garnered numerous prestigious awards.
The company’s ensemble boasts a roster of well-known Czech actors, including Ivan Trojan, Lenka Krobotová, Klára Melíšková, Martin Myšička, and Václav Neužil. The theatre’s consistent demand reflects the strong connection it has forged with audiences.
The move to Galaxie was initially conceived as a temporary fix for the Dejvice Theatre’s director, Lukáš Průdek, who needed to find an alternative venue during the renovation. However, it quickly evolved into a larger project, revitalizing the abandoned Galaxie multiplex and bringing together several Prague-based arts organizations under one roof. As Průdek explained in January 2025, the Galaxie location offered an opportunity to reach a new audience and foster collaboration with different artists.
The Galaxie complex itself, a nine-screen cinema that was once among the first multiplexes in Central and Eastern Europe, has undergone a significant transformation. The space now houses not only the theatre companies but also provides facilities for dance, contemporary art, and educational programs. The project, running for the 2025/26 theatre season, represents a unique collaboration between Dejvice Theatre, Divadlo Minor, the 4+4 Days in Motion festival, DanceConnected, and DAMU.
The Dejvice Theatre’s current program at Galaxie includes a variety of productions. As of , performances of “AbsolutnoKabaret o konci světa” and “Richard III.Kdo chce být králem, musí jednat hned!” are sold out on and , respectively. Other upcoming shows include “KrkavciSměju se při pomyšlení, že by nás takhle mohli naši protivníci vidět,” “FackaZločin a trest a odpouštění,” “Elegance molekulyTři molekuly, tři muži s vizí a odvahou riskovat,” and “Bitva o HernanihoV revoluci je i protiakce krokem vpřed.” A benefit performance, “Každý má svou pravduE = mc²,” is also scheduled for .
The extended stay at Galaxie allows the Dejvice Theatre to continue serving its loyal audience while ensuring a seamless transition back to its renovated home. The theatre’s success, coupled with the revitalization of the Galaxie space, underscores the enduring importance of live performance and the power of cultural collaboration in Prague.
