Cristobal Del Solar, known as “Mr. 57” from his Korn Ferry Tour days, and Thorbjorn Olesen are tied ⁣for the lead at the RBC ‌Canadian Open after firing extraordinary opening rounds.Del Solar and Olesen⁤ each shot a 9-under ‌61 at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley.

Del Solar, a PGA tour rookie from Chile, nearly carded a 59.‌ He⁢ was 10-under par with two holes remaining on the par-70 course. Though, he bogeyed the 17th hole and‍ parred the 18th.

Olesen, who recently qualified for the U.S. Open, had an eagle, eight birdies and one bogey. He credited remarkable putting for his low score.

The soft greens on the North Course, ⁢a result of overnight rain, ⁤contributed to the low scores. Afternoon starters dominated the leaderboard.

Del Solar earned ⁤his “Mr. 57” nickname after shooting a 13-under 57 at the Astara Golf Championship earlier this year, the lowest score in ‍a PGA Tour-sanctioned event.

During his round, Del Solar had a remarkable⁣ stretch of seven birdies in eight holes. He made a birdie putt from six and a half feet on the 14th hole and another from 15 and ‍a half feet on the 16th.

After finding a greenside bunker on the 17th, his par putt missed. On the 18th, needing an eagle for a 59, he drove into the rough and his second shot landed short of the green.

“I was just trying to hit good shots. I was just trying to stay ‌in the present and have⁢ fun. That’s what I was trying to do,” Del Solar saeid.

“Obviously,I played great, but my putting was exceptional today,” Olesen said.⁢ “Don’t think I missed any putts really out there. I definitely holed some long ones⁣ as well. It was nice to see everything go in.”

Cameron Champ followed with a 62, while Jake Knapp posted a 63. ⁢A group of golfers, including Rasmus Hojgaard, Shane Lowry, Trey Mullinax and Ricky Castillo, carded 64s.

Canadian Taylor Pendrith and defending champion Robert MacIntyre each shot 65. Nick⁤ Taylor, the 2023 champion, opened with a 66.

Rory McIlroy, the tournament winner‍ in 2019 and 2022, struggled with a 71 after bogeying the final two holes.

Del Solar and Olesen are just one stroke shy of the tournament record‍ of 60, previously set by Carl Pettersson in ⁤2010 and matched by Justin Rose in 2022.

What’s next

The field will continue play at the RBC Canadian Open, with players vying for the championship title ⁤and valuable FedExCup points. Olesen will also compete in the U.S. Open‍ next week.
