Delhi Police are likely to order a psychological evaluation of a 23-year-old man accused of raping and murdering the 22-year-old daughter of a senior bureaucrat in southeast Delhi, citing his calm demeanour during interrogation and after the crime.
The accused, a former domestic worker who was fired six weeks prior for financial misconduct, allegedly entered the victim’s residence around 6:39 a.m. On Wednesday while her parents were away for their morning workout. He attacked her while she was studying, bludgeoning her with a blunt object and strangling her with a mobile phone charging cable before ransacking the house and fleeing with approximately Rs 2.5 lakh in cash and valuables.
After the crime, the suspect changed clothes and was captured on CCTV leaving the premises calmly with a backpack around 7:22 a.m. He then travelled to a hotel in Dwarka, where he checked in at 9 a.m., telling staff he was exhausted after travelling from Rajasthan and needed a room. Hotel staff reported that he appeared completely normal, filled in his details using an Aadhaar card showing a Rajasthan address, paid around Rs 1,000 for the booking, and behaved normally throughout his stay.
Police tracked his mobile phone to the Dwarka hotel and arrested him at 4 p.m. On the same day. It was only at the time of arrest that hotel staff learned of his alleged involvement in the crime. Investigators said the man had intended to travel to Haryana’s Rewari but missed his train, after which he took an autorickshaw to the hotel.
The accused has remained calm and composed during interrogation, showing no remorse, which prompted police to consider a psychological assessment to gain insights into his mental state, behavioural tendencies, and possible motive. Joint Commissioner of Police (South) Vijay Kumar confirmed the suspect has been booked for rape, murder, and robbery.
The victim’s parents discovered her in a pool of blood upon returning home around 8 a.m. And rushed her to Fortis Hospital, where she was declared dead. Police were alerted subsequently from the hospital by the family.
Authorities are building a watertight case against the accused, with investigations also looking into links to a prior incident in Alwar, Rajasthan, where a similar offence was previously reported. Relatives of the accused, including his father from Garhi village, have been questioned as part of the probe.
