New Delhi: A security drill conducted by the Delhi Police’s Special Cell at the Red Fort on Saturday resulted in the suspension of several police personnel - including constables and head constables – due to a lapse in security protocols. The drill involved a team entering the historically notable premises in civilian clothing carrying a dummy bomb, which security personnel failed to detect.
Independence Day Security Tightened
the incident comes as preparations for the 79th Independence Day celebrations reach a fever pitch. Every year, the Prime Minister addresses the nation from the Red Fort’s ramparts following the flag hoisting ceremony, making it a focal point for national security. The Delhi Police are conducting daily security drills in the lead-up to August 15th.
According to police officials, the Special cell deliberately tested the security arrangements by infiltrating the Red Fort disguised as civilians with the dummy explosive device. The failure of on-duty officers to identify the “threat” led to immediate disciplinary action.
“At that time, the policemen deployed for the security of the red Fort could not trace the bomb, due to which they were suspended,” a delhi Police spokesperson told ANI.
Enhanced Surveillance Measures Implemented
In response to the security lapse and the approaching Independence Day, security around the Red Fort has been considerably increased, designating the area as a high-security zone. Beyond the increased police presence, authorities are deploying a multi-layered surveillance system.
This year marks the first time five distinct types of surveillance cameras will be utilized. These include:
Headcount Cameras: Designed to accurately determine the number of individuals within a specific frame, aiding in the identification of unusual gatherings.
Suspicious Object Detection: Cameras programmed to highlight perhaps dangerous or out-of-place items.
Advanced Vehicle Scanning Systems: Technology to thoroughly inspect vehicles entering the vicinity for any concealed threats.
high-Tech Video Analytics: Software capable of analyzing footage in real-time to identify anomalies and potential security risks.
* Customary CCTV Coverage: Existing camera infrastructure providing complete monitoring of the area.
A comprehensive census of residents in the surrounding areas is also underway to ensure a thorough understanding of the local population and identify any potential security concerns.
In a separate security incident on Monday, Delhi Police arrested five Bangladeshi nationals attempting to illegally enter the Red Fort premises. The individuals, aged between 20 and 25, are reportedly labourers working in Delhi.
Police recovered Bangladeshi identification documents from the group and have launched a full examination into their motives and potential connections. “the age of all of them is around 20-25 years, and they work as labourers in Delhi,” a police statement confirmed.
These incidents underscore the heightened security concerns surrounding the Red Fort as india prepares to celebrate its Independence Day. Authorities are leaving no stone unturned to ensure the safety and security of the Prime Minister, dignitaries, and the public during the national event.
