The city’s grid reliability index, which measures the consistency of electricity availability, has risen from approximately 70 percent in 2002 to over 99.9 percent.
The State of the Grid in the Early 2000s
During the 1980s and 1990s, Delhi’s power situation deteriorated due to electricity providers lacking accountability and a distribution grid that was aging and lacked essential technologies. By 2002, the city experienced nearly daily power outages that lasted for hours, and the quality of the available power often caused screens to flicker and lights to dim.
These systemic failures resulted in more than half of the city’s power being lost to theft and obsolete equipment. Because utilities were only paid for a small portion of the electricity they attempted to deliver, they lacked the necessary funds to invest in infrastructure improvements. This instability led to a high demand for reconditioned generators as residents sought to produce their own power during summer heatwaves.
Impact of Grid Modernization
A joint effort by the city’s distribution utilities and the government over the last 25 years has brought Delhi’s power loss levels in line with those of Belgium and France, and lower than those of Serbia and Greece. This stability has led to several city-wide improvements:
