Delhi is forecast to experience a significant temperature increase, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting that maximum temperatures will reach 40°C by April 17, 2026. This shift follows a period of rain and pleasant weather, marking a transition toward summer conditions in the Indian capital.
According to the IMD, the temperature rise will be gradual over the course of the week. On April 11, the maximum temperature was expected to be around 35°C. Forecasts indicate this will climb to 38°C by April 14, and hover around 39°C on April 15 and April 16, before potentially touching 40°C on April 17.
Daily Temperature Trends
The IMD has noted a gradual rise in maximum temperatures of approximately 6-7°C over a seven-day period. While maximum temperatures were considered below normal, they are expected to return to normal within two days and become above normal or appreciably above normal thereafter.

Minimum temperatures are also projected to increase. On April 12, 2026, minimum temperatures in New Delhi are expected to hover between 18°C and 20°C. These figures are predicted to rise further to between 20°C and 22°C by April 14. Night temperatures during this period are expected to rise from 19°C to approximately 24°C.
Weather Conditions and Atmospheric Factors
Experts have warned that dry winds and sunny conditions will contribute to the heat increase. On April 12, 2026, the weather department indicated that gusty winds are likely to persist during the daytime, blowing at speeds of 15-25 kmph and occasionally reaching up to 35 kmph.
Humidity levels in the city are expected to remain moderate, ranging between 25% and 55%. Meteorologist Navdeep Dahiya stated that as rains taper off, temperatures are set to rise gradually starting the weekend of April 11 and April 12.
Heatwave Forecast and Seasonal Outlook
Despite the rising mercury, the IMD has stated that heatwave conditions are unlikely in Delhi until April 16, 2026. However, the long-term outlook suggests a more intense summer season.
The extended-range forecast issued by the IMD on 2nd April for the next 2 weeks suggests that heat waves are unlikely over Delhi until 16th April 2026. The monthly outlook for April indicates near-normal heatwave days in Delhi, and the seasonal outlook suggests above-normal heatwave days during April to June 2026, suggesting a possibility of increased temperatures and heatwave days in the remaining season.
Akhil Srivastava, IMD Spokesperson
The current weather pattern is attributed by experts to the absence of significant weather activity. While the skies are expected to remain mostly clear in the coming days, the IMD has not issued any major weather warnings at this time.
