Floods in the Sahel: Causes and Consequences

The Sahel region has been experiencing severe flooding due to heavy rainfall, affecting countries such as Chad, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. Mali has declared a state of natural disaster, prompting questions about the causes of these floods. While some attribute the floods to climate change, others point to rapid urbanization and infrastructure issues as contributing factors.

The Role of Climate Change

Climate change is a significant contributor to the flooding in the Sahel. The increasing greenhouse gas emissions, fueled by deforestation, reliance on fossil fuels, and unsustainable agricultural practices, have led to extreme weather phenomena, including floods.

Rapid Urbanization and Infrastructure Issues

Rapid urbanization in Africa has led to the expansion of infrastructure, resulting in the establishment of impervious surfaces such as roads and sidewalks. This prevents water from seeping into the ground, increasing runoff and overloading drainage systems. Urbanization has also reduced wetlands, which are natural sponges that hold and absorb floodwaters.

Poor quality infrastructure and maintenance have also exacerbated the flooding. Blocked pipes due to poor waste management have limited the system’s ability to drain water, leading to pipe bursts.

Consequences of Flooding

Flooding has severe consequences for populations, particularly the most vulnerable, such as Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Refugees and displaced people are often the hardest hit, living in precarious conditions and facing the risk of drowning, homelessness, and epidemics.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimates that over 62,000 houses have been destroyed, and 716,473 people have been affected. The floods have also had significant economic consequences, including the destruction of crops and infrastructure, compromising food security.

Responses to the Floods

The most urgent response is to provide aid to those affected by the floods, including rehousing the homeless and addressing their hygiene and food needs. In the long term, the Sahel states must work to strengthen their capacity to resist floods and reduce their devastating effects.

This requires proactive measures, including thorough urban planning, building water retention and drainage works, raising awareness among populations about good practices, and fighting against climate change through reforestation and promoting indigenous agriculture practices.

Major industrial powers must also take responsibility by reducing their carbon footprint and providing financial support to countries in the South.
