The research, published October 7, 2025, in Alzheimer’s & Dementia: The Journal of the Alzheimer’s Association, adds to a growing body of evidence suggesting that viruses play a role in neurodegenerative diseases.

Specific Viruses Identified as Risk Factors
The study identified several viruses with particularly strong links to dementia. These included viruses causing pneumonia, influenza, and even common cold viruses. notably, individuals who had experienced a severe viral infection, requiring hospitalization, faced a substantially higher risk. Specifically, researchers found a 8.5% increased risk of dementia following a COVID-19 infection, a 3.9% increase after influenza, and a 3% increase after pneumonia.
