Whitesides is the former CEO of Virgin Galactic and previously served as the chief of staff for NASA during the Obama Administration.
The Election
The 27th Congressional District, located north of Los Angeles, has been a key target for Democrats due to its lean towards Democratic voters, despite having more registered Republicans. Whitesides secured the win by highlighting Garcia’s conservative voting record, particularly his support for a national abortion ban.
Significance of the Win
This victory flips a long-coveted House seat to the Democratic column, marking a significant gain for the Democrats in the region. The district, which includes areas dominated by the aerospace industry, had previously been held by Garcia, a former fighter-jet pilot.
Impact on House Balance
This win is part of several competitive House races in Southern California that could influence the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives. Despite Republicans being projected to win control of the Senate, the outcome of these House races remains crucial.
