Dozens of congressional Democrats have raised alarms over the rhetoric used by President Donald Trump regarding Iran, following a series of threats made over the Easter weekend of April 5-6, 2026. The concerns center on the president’s suggestions that the United States would target civilian infrastructure in Iran if the country does not open the Strait of Hormuz.
The controversy began on Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026, when President Trump posted on his social media channel that Tuesday will be Power Plant Day, and Bridge Day, all wrapped up in one, in Iran. There will be nothing like it!!!
In a subsequent post, the president demanded that Iran Open the F—– Strait, you crazy b——-, or you’ll be living in Hell – JUST WATCH!
The president further elaborated on his position during an interview with ABC News’ Rachel Scott, stating that if Iran fails to strike a peace deal that includes opening the strait, we’re blowing up the whole country.
He later insisted that a whole civilization will die tonight
if Tehran does not meet his deadline.
Democratic Response and Legal Concerns
Democratic lawmakers have characterized the president’s behavior as unhinged
and out of control
. Several members of Congress have suggested that targeting bridges and power plants could constitute war crimes, as striking such infrastructure would likely result in civilian casualties.
Democratic Senator Chris Murphy expressed these concerns via X, stating that the current Iranian regime is unlikely to open the strait and that the president’s threats would result in the murder of innocent people to induce national panic.
GOP leaders need to stop him. Never mind that blowing up bridges and power plants and killing innocent Iranians won’t reopen the Strait. It’s also a clear war crime.
Senator Chris Murphy
When asked on Monday, April 7, 2026, if he was concerned that attacking civilian infrastructure would violate international law, President Trump responded, No, no I’m not.
Calls for Removal Under the 25th Amendment
By the afternoon of Tuesday, April 8, 2026, more than 20 Democratic members of Congress called for the U.S. Cabinet to invoke the 25th Amendment to the Constitution. This amendment allows for the removal of a president who is deemed unfit to serve in office.

Representative Rashida Tlaib of Michigan called for the invocation of the amendment, describing the president as a maniac
and a war criminal
who is threatening genocide
after the bombing of a school and the massacre of young girls.
Democrats have cited the president’s mental stability as a primary concern, describing his recent speeches as rambling and incoherent, and noting his use of puerile insults toward U.S. Allies.
Republican Reaction
While Democratic lawmakers have escalated their rebukes and demanded the president’s removal, most Republican lawmakers have remained silent regarding the rhetoric and the threats of military action against Iranian infrastructure.
