Democrats Block US Strikes on Boats in Caribbean
Democrats move to Curb Trump’s Military Actions in the Caribbean
Washington D.C. – Following a series of deadly incidents in the Caribbean involving U.S. forces, Senators Tim Kaine (D-Va.) adn Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) have introduced a joint resolution aimed at restricting President Trump’s authority to launch military strikes without Congressional approval.
The move comes in response to two recent operations in which U.S. forces, acting under President Trump’s direction, killed a total of 14 people aboard boats suspected of drug trafficking. In one incident, three individuals were killed, who the president claimed were part of “exceptionally violent drug trafficking cartels” based in Venezuela. Prior to that,11 lives were lost in a similar strike.
These actions have sparked considerable controversy, notably after U.S. officials acknowledged that the second vessel was heading back towards Venezuela before the strike occurred. This revelation has cast doubt on the justification that the boat posed an imminent threat to the U.S.
Senator Kaine stated that President Trump lacks the legal authority to initiate military actions in the caribbean or elsewhere in the Western Hemisphere. He also criticized the governance for withholding crucial details that would justify the attacks.
Legal and human rights experts have strongly condemned the strikes, labeling them as “murder”
