Democrats’ Divided Stance: Harris Faces Endorsement Anxiety Amid Election Fears

As former Vice President Kamala Harris weighs a potential 2028 presidential run, a growing rift has emerged between her ambitions and the enthusiasm of the Democratic Party’s most influential financial backers. While Harris remains a polarizing figure within the party, her biggest supporters from the 2024 campaign are now hesitant to back her again, raising serious questions about her ability to secure the funding necessary to compete in what is expected to be a crowded and contentious primary. According to reporting by The Times, more than two dozen top donors to the largest pro-Harris super PAC in 2024 were contacted about their willingness to support her in 2028. The response was overwhelmingly lukewarm. Several donors indicated they do not plan to contribute again, others declined to comment, and a few did not respond at all. One fundraiser, speaking anonymously, dismissed the idea of repeating the 2024 effort, stating, “I don’t think it’s a helpful narrative to start with the 2024 hangover.” The sentiment reflects a broader appetite within the party for “new blood”—something fresh and forward-looking, rather than a repeat of past campaigns. This financial caution comes at a time when Democrats are acutely focused on the midterm elections and the need to reclaim Congress. The party’s anxiety about winning is palpable, and Harris’s 2024 defeat to Donald Trump has left many questioning whether she is the best vehicle for a Democratic victory in 2028. Dick Harpootlian, a longtime South Carolina Democratic strategist, encapsulated this sentiment: “The question’s going to be, is there somebody that gives Democratic voters more of a sense that they could win? That’s what all of us are looking for. We want to win in ‘28.” Despite these reservations, Harris continues to enjoy strong support in recent polling. An April survey by the Harvard Center for American Political Studies/Harris Poll showed her leading the Democratic field with 50% of Democratic voters’ backing. Her recent public appearances, including a speaking tour and a book launch about her 2024 campaign, have also been met with enthusiasm. In April, she told a New York audience that she “might” run for president again, and last month, she told Rev. Al Sharpton that she was “thinking about it.” Harris’s decision not to run for California governor in a wide-open race was widely interpreted as a signal of her presidential ambitions. Her reentry into the public eye, marked by a book tour and high-profile speaking engagements, has kept her name in the conversation. However, her path to the nomination in 2028 is far from clear. The party’s financial hesitation, combined with the perception that she may not be the most electable candidate, presents a formidable challenge. A person close to Harris acknowledged the “doth protest too much” quality to some of the skepticism, suggesting that it may be a backhanded acknowledgment of her potential strength if she were to run. The person also noted that the 2028 dynamic would be different from 2024, when Harris entered the race late after President Biden’s exit. As the Democratic Party grapples with its future, the question of whether Harris will run—and whether she can secure the necessary support to do so—remains a critical one. With midterm elections looming and the party’s focus on winning, the former vice president’s ability to rally both voters and donors will be decisive in determining her role in the 2028 race.
