Demolition Looms: Beloved New Life Overpass Faces Uncertain Future, Leaving Residents Wondering What’s Next
Reported by Political Center/Pan Boating and Chen Zeyuan
In response to the demolition of the Shanti Jinsheng overpass in Taipei City today (4th), citizens have launched a collective protest, leading to Taipei Mayor Chiang Wanan discussing suspending the demolition yesterday (3rd) and saying that communications would be strengthened, but the demolition was carried out. Suspended for one day only. The “Guard the Peaceful New Life Overpass” group, along with students, cultural and historical activists, experts and scholars, went to the foot of the overpass holding placards and chanting “Protect the overpass and oppose its destruction”. “Demolish the overpass without evaluation, but the memory of the city must be preserved.” Among them, Lin Minjun, a co-signatory of the new life overpass protection and a local resident, emphasized: “Where is the communication?”.
Lin Minjun said that he discovered on October 24 that a demolition notice was posted on the Heping Jinsheng overpass, and the notice was only A4 paper size “In fact, people passing by could not see it at all.” He noted that due to the large number of public opinion against the overpass demolition, The Taipei City New Construction Office only held its first briefing meeting on November 1, and the result of the briefing meeting was that demolition was suspended for only one day. Current management measures for new construction offices are: Install a fence and enclose stairs.
In response to public appeals to oppose the destruction of the overpass, Taipei Mayor Chiang Wanan responded only that “communications will be strengthened.” There are no instructions for demolishing the overpass, or destroying the overpass.
Currently, the new construction office provides an “assessment report” on the cause of the overpass’ demolition. However, Lin Minjun fired back, saying that the report was only published on September 27 this year, and the content noted that the overpass is now 42 years old, and should be retained due to local demand. “I want to ask why a report from September, published in October done?” Will it be demolished? What happened in the middle?” Also, in May, the inspection agency submitted an inspection report for the overpass that said parts were corroded and porous and recommended that they be repaired within a year: “Since it only needs repair why did the city government decide to demolish it? took it?”
Also, Lin Minjun noted that there are many overpasses in Taipei City that are more than 40 years old, among them, the overpass in front of Taiping Elementary School and Yongle Elementary School was built 50 years ago, under Mayor Hao Longbin. , local people and former students of Taiping Elementary School, , cultural and historical activists, etc., the old overpass was finally successfully preserved, and even became a cultural overpass in Dadaocheng, an overpass that protects children going to and from school . “Taipei City has many old overpasses, why should the 42-year-old Peaceful New Life overpass be demolished first? Woolen cloth?”.
As for the new construction section, it says that when the overpass is demolished, ancillary measures including pedestrian-only stages, zebra crossing setbacks and pedestrian refuge islands will be implemented. Lin Minjun said that in 2014 and 2023, the North City Government implemented a “pedestrian-only stage” at the Heping Jinsheng intersection, but the test results were a huge failure. “How can such auxiliary measures solve the problem of pedestrian and vehicle flow. Destroy the overpass?”
