Dengue Fever Spreads: Egypt’s Neighbors on High Alert as Dozens Fall Ill
Dengue Fever Outbreak in Sudan’s East Nile State Claims 6 Lives
Dengue fever has claimed the lives of 6 people, including 3 children, in the Soba East area of Sudan’s East Nile state, according to health officials.
The East Nile Emergency Room has identified 32 cases of the virus, primarily concentrated in the areas of al-Shaqila, al-Salama, and al-Tuwaireb. The virus, transmitted through mosquito bites, poses a significant threat to public health.
Understanding Dengue Fever
Dengue fever is a severe and potentially life-threatening disease characterized by symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, fatigue, skin rash, low blood pressure, and difficulty breathing. The disease spreads rapidly in tropical and subtropical regions and can be fatal if left untreated.
Challenges in Sudan’s Health Sector
This latest outbreak occurs amidst significant deterioration in Sudan’s health sector, particularly in conflict-affected areas. Nearly 80% of health facilities have ceased functioning due to shortages of medicine and medical supplies, exacerbating the crisis.
Rapid Expansion of the Disease
The Khartoum Bahri Emergency Room reported 384 suspected cases in April, highlighting the rapid expansion of the disease in the country. Health officials are working to contain the outbreak and prevent further spread.
Prevention and Investment in Health Infrastructure
Health officials are urging residents to take preventative measures against mosquito bites, such as wearing long clothing and using insect repellent. They are also calling for increased investment in health infrastructure to limit future disease outbreaks and strengthen the country’s healthcare system.
