Recent Dengue Activity in Florida

As of August 30, 2025, Florida is experiencing increased dengue fever activity. Hillsborough and Pasco counties, located on the state’s west coast near Tampa and Orlando, have both reported locally acquired cases of the virus in June and August 2025, respectively. these findings have prompted enhanced mosquito surveillance and control efforts, including aerial spraying, by the Florida Department of Health.

Through August 30, 2025, a total of 16 locally acquired cases have been identified within Florida, with the highest concentrations in Brevard County (11 cases) and Miami-Dade County (3 cases) on the east coast.Additionally, the state has recorded 171 travel-associated dengue cases this year, as detailed in Arbovirus Surveillance update #34 published on August 23, 2025.

Travel-Associated Cases: Cuba as a Primary Source

The majority (99 cases) of the travel-associated dengue infections reported in Florida in 2025 are linked to travel to Cuba. This highlights the ongoing risk of dengue transmission in certain international destinations and the importance of preventative measures for travelers.

Understanding Dengue Virus Types and Vaccination

Dengue fever is caused by four distinct serotypes of the dengue virus (DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4). Infection with one serotype provides immunity to that specific type, but not against the others. Subsequent infections with different serotypes can increase the risk of severe dengue.

Currently, within the United States, dengue vaccination is only available in Puerto Rico. Outside the U.S., a second-generation dengue vaccine exists that demonstrates effectiveness against two of the four dengue virus types, offering partial protection for those traveling to or residing in endemic areas.

Given the increasing incidence of both locally acquired and travel-associated dengue cases, it is crucial to take preventative measures to avoid mosquito bites. These include using insect repellent,wearing long sleeves and pants,and eliminating standing water where mosquitoes can breed.
