Dengue Vaccine: Why Mendoza Won’t Be Vaccinating
Mendoza Holds Off on Dengue Vaccine Despite Early Cases
Mendoza, Argentina – As the first cases of dengue fever emerge in Mendoza earlier than usual this year, the province is taking a cautious approach to vaccination. While other provinces are moving forward with vaccination programs using doses provided by the national government or through their own purchases, Mendoza will not be administering the dengue vaccine at this time.
Health Minister Rodolfo Montero reiterated the province’s stance during a press conference Friday, prior to a training session for journalists on dengue prevention and control. He cited two primary reasons for Mendoza’s decision: the province doesn’t currently meet the epidemiological criteria for vaccination, and the vaccine is still undergoing Phase 4 clinical trials.
The national government’s Plan estratégico de Prevención y Control de Dengue 2024-2025 allocated 160,000 doses to 48 high-risk departments across 11 provinces. These areas were selected based on year-round dengue circulation and a high incidence rate of over 4,200 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
Mendoza’s current dengue situation does not meet these criteria, leading the province to hold off on vaccination for now.
