The DePaul University community is mourning the sudden death of Chase Stegall, a 20-year-old soccer player. Stegall, a member of the men’s soccer team, was found unresponsive in a residence hall on the school’s Lincoln Park campus Monday, according to university officials. His unexpected death has prompted an outpouring of grief and support.
Police responded to a call at approximately 8:30 a.m. in the 2300 block of Kenmore Avenue. Stegall was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy is pending as authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
Izaiah Coleman, Stegall’s teammate and roommate, expressed his shock and disbelief. “I’m very shocked,” Coleman said. “I didn’t think it was real. I was waiting for him to be like, to come in through the door.” He remembered Stegall as an exceptionally positive person.
Coleman hopes to carry on Stegall’s optimistic outlook. “He’s like ‘you’ve got so much to live for,’” Coleman said, recalling stegall’s encouragement. “He just told me all the time ‘you can’t be negative about these things.’ So that’s something to move forward. Now that he’s not with me physically…I just have to live with a smile on my face, just like Chase did.”
