Derby Christmas Lights Spark Mixed Reactions
Festive Cheer Lights Up Downtown Despite Surrounding Blight
Long eaton, KY – The holiday spirit is shining bright in downtown Long Eaton, thanks to a dazzling new Christmas lights display. While residents are praising the festive cheer, some are expressing concern over the neglected state of the surrounding area.
Carol Clifton, 63, was beaming as she admired the twinkling lights. ”I think it’s really nice,” Clifton said. “They should be proud of it. The whole thing is lovely. It’s got more atmosphere than other places we’ve been to.”
Though, Anne Taranto, 68, from nearby Derby, felt the derelict Assembly Rooms car park and the closed market cast a shadow over the festive display. “It sort of spoils the atmosphere,” Taranto remarked.
Despite her reservations about the surrounding area, Taranto gave the Santa Claus display a perfect score. “The Santa gets a 10 out of 10,” she said. “I think it’s just a shame the marketplace is as it is at the moment.”
Taranto acknowledged the effort put forth by the city council. “It’s the surround that I think detracts from what the council have tried to do,” she explained. “But I certainly think Christmas without lights would be very sad so I’m glad they’ve done it.”
