Barcelona Move to the Top of the Spanish Football League
Barcelona secured a 3-1 victory over Espanyol in the Catalonia summit, moving them to the top of the Spanish football league on Sunday. The win was thanks to two goals from Dani Olmo and another from Rafinha in the first half.
With this win, Barcelona moved nine points behind Real Madrid, whose match against Valencia was postponed due to severe flooding in the east. Espanyol, on the other hand, are in 17th place, just one point above the relegation zone.
Barcelona’s Control and Goals
Barcelona controlled the ball from the start, and it wasn’t long before they scored their first goal. Al-Amin Jamal passed the ball to Olmo, who opened the scoring with a direct shot. The second goal came from another excellent pass from the middle of the field, when Marc Casado passed to Rafinha, making it 2-0.
Espanyol thought they had succeeded in reducing the deficit when Joffrey Carreras found his way into the net from a counter-attack, but the goal was ruled out by the video assistant referee for offside. Barcelona then deepened their opponents’ wounds when Olmo eluded the mark and fired home a powerful shot to score his fifth league goal in five games this season.
Olmo’s Comments and the Second Half
Olmo didn’t have the chance to complete his hat-trick of goals when Hansie Flick headed him in 10 minutes into the second half. Another Espanyol goal was ruled out by a wide offside trap by Barcelona, which saved them again. However, Espanyol finally managed to break the trap when Carlos Romero sent a pass to Boadu, who beat Barcelona goalkeeper Inaki Pena.
Barcelona were not effective in attack in the second half, especially after replacing Olmo, but Flick’s side did enough to secure the three points. Olmo said, “We’re going step by step, and it’s very important to keep winning… Espanyol couldn’t have come here and given us anything, but we got the three points for doing the job.”
He added, “We are a team that scores a lot of goals from attacking players and midfielders. We decided to play direct and create a lot of chances in every match.”
