Derry-based Ulster University professor, Deirdre Heenan, is reportedly in the final stages of negotiations to become Fianna Fáil’s candidate for the upcoming presidential election.

The Irish Independent has reported that Professor Deirdre Heenan, a prominent figure at Ulster University’s Magee campus in Derry, is being strongly considered by Fianna Fáil for the presidential race. Sources suggest that Taoiseach Micheál Martin views Heenan as his preferred candidate, indicating a significant level of support within the party.
While Professor Heenan herself has neither confirmed nor denied the claims, her potential candidacy has generated considerable interest. Her academic background and extensive experience in public service position her as a strong contender.
A Distinguished Academic and Public Servant
Professor heenan’s profile at Ulster University highlights a distinguished career. She previously served as Provost and Dean of Academic growth at the Magee Campus in derry. Her academic work focuses on healthcare, education policy, social care, and devolution, making her a respected voice in these critical areas. She is also a co-founder and former co-director of the Northern Ireland Life and Times Survey, a testament to her commitment to research and public understanding.
Her contributions extend beyond academia. In 2008, she spent nine months as a policy adviser in the Office of the First Minister and Deputy First Minister, gaining valuable insight into governance and policy-making. Further demonstrating her commitment to public service, in 2011, she was appointed by the health minister to a five-strong panel of experts tasked with overseeing a significant review of Health and social Care in Northern Ireland.

A notable aspect of Professor Heenan’s public service career is her appointment in 2012 to the Irish President’s Council of State. As one of the seven personal nominees of President Michael D. Higgins, she has had direct involvement in advising the presidency.
Her engagement with the Derry community is also evident. She serves as a director of ILEX, the urban regeneration company for Derry~Londonderry, and is a school governor at two local institutions: foyle College and St. Patrick’s Pennyburn.

Professor Heenan’s educational background includes studies at Banbridge Academy and Ulster University. Originally from Annaclone, she now resides in Derry with her husband and three sons. Her responsibilities at Ulster University have also encompassed corporate communications, brand management, internal communications, web development, public relations, media relations, and public affairs. As campus Provost for Coleraine and Magee, she has also overseen general campus affairs, including service standards, pastoral care for students and staff, and engagement with the wider community.
Her academic accolades include a Distinguished Teaching Award in 2001 and a National Teaching Fellowship from the Higher Education Academy in 2006.
