Des Moines to Host USA Triathlon Nationals in 2027 and 2028

USA Triathlon and Catch Des Moines, the local sports and tourism commission, announced on April 29, 2026, that Des Moines, Iowa, has been selected to host the USA Triathlon Nationals in 2027 and 2028. The selection is part of a long-term partnership to bring the organization’s largest and longest-running National Championship to the city, which will serve as a first-time host for the event.

The championships are scheduled to take place from August 6 to August 8, 2027, and from August 4 to August 6, 2028. Each event will feature three days of racing designed for the country’s top short-course amateur adult triathletes.

Event Structure and Competition

The USA Triathlon Nationals will encompass several major national competitions. The racing schedule includes the Sprint and Olympic Distance National Championships, the Draft-Legal Triathlon National Championships, and the Mixed Relay National Championships.

Athletes participating in these events will compete for age group national titles. The event serves as a pathway for athletes to qualify for the World Triathlon Age Group Triathlon World Championships.

The event also integrates the Paratriathlon National Championships, providing a venue for both elite and developing paratriathletes to compete for national titles as part of the broader annual championship series.

Logistics and Registration

USA Triathlon stated that registration for the 2027 races is expected to open during the summer of 2026.
