Incident Highlights Shortage of Pediatric Emergency Specialists
A recent incident in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province, has highlighted the shortage of pediatric emergency specialists in the region. An 8-year-old girl, Ms. A, accidentally swallowed detergent and was taken to Soonchunhyang University Cheonan Hospital, a regional emergency medical center.
However, the hospital did not have a pediatric emergency specialist available, and Ms. A was transferred to Chungnam National University Hospital in Daejeon, 80km away, after a three-hour wait.
According to fire authorities, Ms. A’s guardian called 119 at 8:04 p.m. after she began experiencing neck pain. The dispatched emergency team confirmed that Dankook University Hospital, another regional emergency medical center in the area, had a pediatric emergency specialist on duty but was unable to accept Ms. A due to the lack of behind-the-scenes care.
The emergency team then inquired about the availability of treatment at nine nearby medical institutions before transferring Ms. A to Chungnam National University Hospital at 9:49 p.m.
