Spencer Torkelson and the Detroit Tigers face mounting roster uncertainty as manager A.J. Hinch implements a September youth movement that has sharply diminished playing time for established veterans, according to reporting from The Athletic.

Roster Crunch Pushes Spencer Torkelson Into Timeshare

Torkelson, the No. 1 overall pick of the 2020 MLB Draft, has started only one of the Tigers’ past four games as the organization evaluates younger prospects down the stretch of the season. According to The Athletic, Hinch called in several veterans—including Gleyber Torres, Javier Báez, Zach McKinstry, and Torkelson—for direct conversations regarding their changing roles as rookies take over the diamond. Five years into his career, Torkelson has logged 2,668 plate appearances with a 101 career wRC+, making him a league-average hitter through multiple major league demotions in 2022 and 2024. Despite the benching, Torkelson expressed a pragmatic approach to his current situation to The Athletic.

Control the controllables. How you show up every day. Be a great teammate. Keep working my ass off. Still believe. Just because I had a couple tough months doesn’t mean I’m done for. … I want to be in a different position, but right now I kind of know where we’re at, and I understand it.

Position Shuffling Creates Logjam Across Tigers Infield

The playing time squeeze stems from a wave of minor league promotions designed to test the organization’s depth. Rookie Hao-Yu Lee has contributed productively at second base while also seeing time at third, and John Peck jumped straight to the majors after just six games at Triple-A to secure the primary shortstop role, according to The Athletic. That infield movement forced Kevin McGonigle to third base and pushed Colt Keith across the diamond to first base, creating a direct timeshare with Torkelson. Hinch acknowledged the roster logjam plainly to The Athletic, stating, We got a lot of mouths to feed in that regard.

Colt Keith Navigates Multiple Positions Amid Uncertainty

While Torkelson fights for at-bats, Keith carries significantly more job security after signing a pre-debut contract in 2024 that guaranteed six years and more than $28 million, according to The Athletic. The organization initially asked Keith to play second base, later shifted him to first when Torres arrived, and has recently evaluated him at third base. Now back at first base in a timeshare with Torkelson, Keith is working to adjust his defensive style while leaning on his teammate for advice. Keith described the defensive juggling act to The Athletic.

The balancing act of being prepared to play all three of those positions at the big-league level is definitely tough. But I’m up for the challenge. I’m here for the team. I want to win, so whatever helps them put the best lineup on the field, I’ll do. They know that, so that’s why they throw that at me.

Both Torkelson and Keith enter an upcoming winter of roster evaluation alongside teammates McKinstry, Matt Vierling, Parker Meadows, and Wenceel Pérez, as the Tigers sort through an overloaded group of position players.
