Detroit Tigers Unveil New Alternate Uniforms, Balancing Tradition and Modernity
– The Detroit Tigers today revealed a new set of alternate uniforms, introducing navy blue and orange options to be worn during select games this season. The announcement, made after nearly two years of fan and player input, marks a significant step for a franchise historically cautious about deviating from its established look.
For over three decades, the Tigers have navigated the challenge of honoring their rich history while embracing the growing trend of alternate jerseys in Major League Baseball. According to team officials, the process was “as difficult as a Tarik Skubal fastball on the corner.” The new uniforms aim to strike a balance between the club’s storied past and a modern aesthetic.
The navy blue alternate will be worn on the road, while the orange version will make its debut at Comerica Park. Fans will first see the uniforms in action during Spring Training, paired with MLB-designed Grapefruit League caps. Merchandise, including the jerseys and hats, will be available for purchase starting at The D Shop in both Detroit and Lakeland, as well as online this weekend.
The decision to introduce alternate uniforms followed an extensive period of feedback collection, including surveys and focus groups. The team discovered that fans and players were receptive to the idea, but emphasized the importance of preserving the iconic Olde English D and the legacy of the franchise, particularly the 1984 World Series champions.
Prior to this unveiling, the Tigers were one of only two Major League teams without regular alternate uniforms, aside from the previously released City Connect/Motor City jerseys. The organization recognized a desire for change among its fanbase, but wanted to ensure that any new designs remained respectful of the team’s identity.
The new uniforms feature a colorful twist on the familiar lettering and script that have defined the Tigers for generations. The home orange edition will be worn on Fridays at Comerica Park, while the navy uniform will be used for select road games, joining the existing City Connect jerseys in the team’s rotation.
Both the navy and orange uniforms will be paired with a navy blue hat featuring an orange Olde English D. A unique design element includes an orange brim on each hat, deviating from the traditional navy color. The orange home uniforms also incorporate a sleeve patch with a vintage logo and stripes, paying homage to the team’s history.
“We’re proud to introduce these new uniforms, which have been years in the making,” said Ilitch Sports + Entertainment president and CEO Ryan Gustafson in a statement. The uniforms represent a culmination of extensive planning and collaboration, aiming to satisfy both tradition and a desire for a fresh look.
