Port Vila, Vanuatu – A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck the island nation of Vanuatu on Tuesday, causing widespread damage in the capital city of Port Vila, including to the building housing the U.S. Embassy.
The quake, which struck at 12:47 p.m. local time,was centered 57 kilometers below the surface and approximately 30 kilometers off the coast of Efate,Vanuatu’s main island,according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
Eyewitness accounts paint a grim picture of the aftermath. Michael Thompson, a local resident and zipline tour operator, described scenes of devastation in Port Vila. Speaking to AFP via satellite phone, Thompson reported seeing collapsed buildings and bodies in the streets.
“There are people trapped inside buildings in the city. There are a number of bodies there as we passed by,” he said. thompson also reported a landslide blocking a road, burying a bus underneath. “It’s clear there are some fatalities there,” he added.
Thompson shared photos and videos of the destruction on social media,including footage verified by AFP showing emergency responders and rescue vehicles at a building where the roof had collapsed,crushing parked cars and trucks.
The extent of the damage and the number of casualties are still being assessed.

Thompson: The city is in ruins. There are collapsed buildings everywhere. I saw one landslide that fully buried a bus. There are definitely fatalities, and emergency responders are working tirelessly to find survivors.
ND3: can you tell us about the damage to the U.S. Embassy?
Thompson: The embassy building took a serious hit. Parts of the structure are damaged, and there’s debris scattered everywhere. I’m not sure if anyone was injured there, but the damage is extensive.
ND3: What are the biggest needs right now in Port Vila?
Thompson: People need immediate medical attention, food, water, and shelter. the situation is desperate, and help is urgently needed.
